Animated Italian Beef Editorial Illustration

An editorial illustration for an Italian beef sandwich for the LA Times, this sandwich food illustration and animated gif were created to showcase the Chicago style Italian Beef sandwich to complement an article on Chicago and the Italian Beef sandwich.

The Brief: To create an image of a Chicago-style Italian beef sandwich for an LA Times article for both online and print editions

Role: Illustrator responsible for composition, illustration, and animation.

Tools Used: Procreate app, iPad Pro, Apple pencil, and Photoshop

The LA Times were looking for an illustration for an article by Lucas Kwan Peterson that launched in September 2022 (online it posted 23 September 2022). Being from Chicago, this was a fun job for me because I love Italian beef sandwiches so I was happy to create something colorful, fun, and tasty-looking to suit the brief. The online version needed an animated gif version as well, so I created a still illustration to go on the print version, and animated it into gif form to suit the online article. Thanks to Art Director Kay Lai Scanlon for the commission and feedback on the composition.
